Happiness

Happiness is really important for any Pokemon in any game; but it is really important in Gold, Silver, and Crystal. Why is this, you ask? Well, because some Pokemon evolve when they become happy enough or also can be called becoming tame. These Pokemon include Igglybuff, Cleffa, Pichu, Togepi, Golbat, Chansey, and Eevee. To make these Pokemon evolve you need to make sure your Pokemon is happy enough. There is a little statistic system that keeps track even though you can't see it. The statistics can be from 1 to 255 with 1 being the most disliked and 255 being loved.

There is a way to tell how much your Pokemon like you and that is by talking to the lady in Goldenrod City. She is located in a house north of the Bike Shop. This is what she says:

Happiness Values
Woman
0-49
It doesn't seem to like you at all. It looks mean.
50-99
You should treat it better. It's not used to you.
100-149
It's quite cute.
150-199
It's friendly towards you. It looks sort of happy.
200-249
I get the feeling that it really trusts you.
250-255
It looks really happy! It must love you a lot.

In order for the Pokemon to evolve when they become tame/happy their values need to equal to 218 or higher. If it is any lower then it will not evolve. You must raise one level for it to evolve even if the happiness is at 255. Certain ways of obtaining Pokemon change the values too. Here are the values from these certain ways:

Happiness Value

70
Any ball (except Friend Ball)
120
Hatches from egg
200

Certain things can be done to raise or lower your Pokemon happiness values. The ammount of happiness that increases depends on what your Pokemon's happiness value is already. There have been many rumors and lies about what you can do; this list will cover what the possible things to do are:

A final note is that in Pokemon Crystal while training a Pokemon, that Pokemon will gain 50% more happiness than normal when you train and level up in the area it was caught. To find out where your Pokemon was caught talk to the PokeSeer north of Cianwood city. If you traded the Pokemon it is where the Pokemon Center is. Since there is no PokeSeer in Gold & Silver versions that means this does not work on them.
