PokeGear

In Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal versions there is a new item you get to use on your journey. This item is called the Pokegear. The PokeGear is useful in many ways as you get a cellphone to keep in touch, a map to know where to go, a watch to know what time it is, and even a radio to listen to at your leisure. Below you will find explanations on all of those items.

Clock
The time of day is displayed on the clock. This is vital for your journey. Some Pokemon only appear during night, morning, or day. Some Pokemon even evolve depending on if it is during the day or night.

This clock not only displays the time, it also displays the day of the week. This is important because certain events happen on a certain given day. Keep an eye on the clock during your journey.

Map
At the start of the game you do not have the map. You must receive it from the old man that gives you a tour in Cherrygrove City. After that he gives you the map card to attach to your PokeGear. He says that only after you attach things to your PokeGear does it become useful, and my friends...he is so right.

This card displays the map of Johto, and further into the game it displays the map for Kanto. It changes to the Kanto map when you step into the Kanto region automatically. This is essential if you do not know where you are supposed to go next or how to navigate to the next town.

Phone
This part of your Pokegear comes right at the beginning. It is given a full explanation by your Mom when you receive it from her upon leaving your room.

The cellphone is for keeping in touch with your Mom, Professor Elm, and other trainers. Your Mom and Professor Elm are required to stay in your phone, but you can add and delete other trainers. They call you to tell you about rare Pokemon, conditioning updates, and even rematches.

Radio
This is the card that allows you to listen to the radio. To receive this card you need to answer the questions given to you in the Radio Tower in Goldenrod City correctly. These questions are easy, so don't worry about failing it. If you do, there is an option to re-take the quiz.

The radio gives Professor Oaks talks on Pokemon. It also has different music on different days of the week. On some days it is the Pokemon Lullaby making chances of encountering Pokemon decrease, or it is the Pokemon March to make them appear more often.
