Pocket Monsters Green

Japan Release Date: February 27, 1996
America Release Date: Never

Pocket Monsters Green is a mystery to those of us in the USA. Green version was supposed to go hand in hand with Pokemon Red in America, but due to poor sales in the Green version department in Japan they decided not to translate it and send it to the USA. Reasons for the poor sales for Pokemon Green was most likely the horrible sprites used in it.

Pocket Monsters Red and Green were differed by the catchable Pokemon and sprites. The sprites used in Pokemon Red and Blue in the USA were just duplicates of Pocket Monsters Red from Japan. Looking at the sprites from Pocket Monsters Green, it isn't hard to see why people preferred Red over Green.

Pocket Monsters Green is the exact same as Pokemon Blue except for the sprites. You still go on your Pokemon Journey battling for badges and the right to face the Elite Four. The Pokemon that are not availible in Pocket Monsters Green are the same Pokemon not available in Pokemon Blue:

Pokemon not available in Pocket Monsters Green

The advanced generation shows that it was supposed to be Pokemon Red & Green as the originals because of Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green, but it was Pokemon Red & Blue. Pocket Monsters Blue was also released in Japan after they discontinued selling Pocket Monsters Green. Pocket Monsters Blue is a different game from the others too, and it is not available outside of Japan.

All in all, this game isn't really that big of a deal not to have. We already have Pokemon Blue which is pretty much the exact same thing. The only thing I am questioning is what Pocket Monsters Blue is in Japan. Is it entirely different than the others? We will have to see.
